Dragon flies in to UK
UK supermarket Sainsbury’s has listed Changyu Noble Dragon Cab Gernisht (said to be carmenere) from the Yantai region in China. The reason is said to be the Chinese New Year. The retail price is a healthy £8 ($13.31). Is this a toe in the door? Will Chinese wine get a greater hold in the UK market? China has the quantity but we believe the quality is in the main not there.
Lettie Teague, The Wall Street Journal, 25 January:
“It’s the responsibility of wine journalists, too. I found so many well-made, well-priced bottles that I’m embarrassed at having overlooked Australia for so long. But as wine drinkers willing to gamble will find, there’s much to like about the wines from Oz.”
