For the first time in a decade Penfolds Grange is not topping the list as the most collected wine. No surprise there. It has become very expensive and its price on the secondary market in this country is not great.

Taking its place is the much loved, and a tenth of the price, Penfolds 389 Shiraz Cabernet. Red wines dominate, taking up 41 spots out of the 50, leaving just nine whites:

2016 Wine Change from 2013
9 Grosset Polish Hill Riesling Clare Valley
12 Leeuwin Est Art Series Chardonnay Margaret River Down 2
17 Tyrrell’s Vat 1 Semillon Hunter Up 3
23 Lake’s Folly Chardonnay Hunter Up 12
25 Giaconda Estate Chardonnay Beechworth Up 32
27 Petaluma Hanlin Hill Riesling Clare Valley Down 6
34 Grosset ‘Springvale’ Watervale Riesling Clare Valley Down 6
46 Tyrrell’s Vat 47 Chardonnay Hunter Up 31
50 Pierro Chardonnay Margaret River Down 2

Five chardonnays, three rieslings and one Hunter semillon. Depending on the time span over which Wine Ark’s customers expect to keep the wines and drink them, one would have expected a few more Hunter semillon wines in store. Perhaps the reality is more to do with resale value than pleasure.

The Penfolds brands holds the most spots, with eight wines in the 50. Seven of them are in the top 16. They’re all red, and mostly shiraz. Shiraz dominates the list, with about half the wines either full or shiraz blends.

It’s a conservative list in many ways, note how many of the wines are also in the Langton’s classification, also note the top Langton’s rank exceptional has 11 places in the Wine Ark top 20. It  shows how the knowledgeable wine consumer thinks.
